Yes - there is a huge difference, but you did successfully do a "reset" (though its called a reset, it's really rebooting the newton).

If you hold down the power switch while the newton boots up (e.g. holding it down while pressing the reset button on the back of the newton) you will be shown a dire warning message on the screen - asking you if you want to completely erase your newton with yes and no buttons. No lets the newton boot up normally - yes wipes all data on the internal memory - the ONLY thing that survives this "hard-wipe" are operating system patches. All other data / packages are removed.
