As you've already found out, this indicates a memory hardware failure.
Although
I doubt it'll help in your case, you might want to let your Newton
undergo the
reset sequence I describe here

EXACTLY as I describe it. EXACTLY as in "do not do ANYTHING
differently".

If, after having undergone this, your Newton's backlight still flashes,
your
Newton has a hardware defect. If you can't fix it, you are welcome to
send it

don't want me to fix it.
