Actually you CAN backup just one soup (notes, dates, etc) with a card.
It is NCU that you are thinking of that requires a full backup the first
time (and shouldn't be trusted with incremental backups anyway).

The emate is somewhat fussy as to what cards will work in it. So make
sure you check and make sure that card will work in your emate. Of
course all apple cards will but they are somewhat hard to come by in
comparison to other cards. Another option would be to use Paul's ATA
driver and get a standard ATA card with a lot more room. The downside
is it tends to be a little slower. You can get a list of cards that
have been proven to work with the driver and test out the driver with a
4mb partition.
