Regarding producing optimized (smallest possible size while still
looking good) images, if you have photoshop check out the save for
web feature. It strips out pretty much everything not necessary for
viewing the image, like the preview thumbnail, etc. that you don't
need on the Newton anyway.

In this feature, you can dial the image compression up and down and
compare it to the original, and get a reading of how long it will
take to transport the image over various media speeds.
