Actually it might, since there isn't a standard for "mac modem" cables.
  Some of these are regular old peripheral 8 cables (aka imagewriter
cables), some of them are the opposite (receive and transmit wise).
Depending on who provided the cable and with which modem...

Still a bad idea to start with one in my opinion, since they really
aren't as standard.
