[NTLK] works - footnotes

is there any way to make footnotes in newton works?

say i have a word document with lots of footnotes; Ok,
i can convert to rtf. But i'm pretty sure either
converting to rtf or importing to newt works would
mangle or destroy the footnotes.

Any ideas? I can compose on the newt with my own code
like

<NOTE>
Royce Walthrop, Sprockets!, San Francisco: Addison
Weslye (2064).
</note>

or some such but what about exporting a document from
word to my newton?
