Turning off WEP is another way of saying you want an open network. You can still control who joins by restricting MAC addresses. My home network is set up that way.

Be sure you enter the SSID correctly in the MP. Mode must be infrastructure.

I have problems switching between hot spots, DNS errors. Appears the networking software is not doing a DHCP renew fast enough. Pull card and incert card once or twice will get it going. Any chance your signal strength is low?
