Thanks to you Matt and Jon for keeping me company on this fool's
errand...

Let's see. First, Jon, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 when I'm using
the manual settings.

Matt - The whole deal looks like this, under Manual:

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Local IP Address: 10.0.1.7
Gateway / Router Address: 10.0.1.1
Primary DNS/Name Server Address 10.0.1.1
Domain Name: <None>

I've also tried 10.0.1.4 as an IP (that would be sequential after the
two laptops in the house are assigned their IPs) .

Originally, I had nothing under Primary DNS / Name Server Address, then
decided to use 10.0.1.1 after I saw it in the DNS section of the TCP/IP
tab of my PowerBook Network Settings.

Should I be doing more with DNS server addresses?

I.
