It is absolutely necessary.

Hinges do not always get stiff before the springs pop out and
kill the display cable. Quite frequently they pop out
out of the blue.

No. But for all machines that haven't undergone this
treatment yet ;-)

Yes. Do it now. If you can't, do it tomorrow. The day
after tomorrow it might be too late.
