also some other free educational software -- whether suitable for
your 8-year old or not I'll leave up to you
e.g., Countdown, Geometry Construction Set, Sproing, Hanoi, Crypto, Life
and of course "Turtle" environment (with NewtDevEnv ) -- my first
Newton application)
