Oh yes this is very possible. When most people say "sync" they refer to
taking the data on your newton and basically making a duplicate on a
desktop machine. All changes on one machine are merged so that both
machines have the exact same data in the end. This is quite tricky as I
said. But simple package install and exporting of data is very possible.

Newton Connection Utilities can install packages and export sketches or
data. Just export it to RTF format rather than plain text. But plain
text notes and such can be easily exported as plain text or RTF. You
will still need slowdown of course. It is on UNNA in the windows
section as I said.
