There are several ways of taking screenshots. Most are listed in
the FAQ [1], although several of the links are broken.

Like Brian Parker, I use NPDS to create my screenshots, but this
particular set up is probably overkill (and rather complicated)
for most purposes.
As an alternative, I really like Daniel Padilla's ScreenShooter
[2]. It will capture a screenshot of the entire screen or just
the front application window and then send it as a .gif
attachment using SimpleMail [3]. I does require the use of the
GIFServer [3] module from the NPDS software suite.
