Laser Diodes are bigger than IR LEDs (at least those that I know of
are), so it probably won't fit in the newtons casing.
And AFAIK the power consumption of a Laser Diode is higher. Building
an external unit that can be connected to the serial port seems to be
a good option, though.
There are some legal issues involved, in germany only ham radio
enthuisiasts are allowed to build and use such units.
