Actually, I believe is Jobs was in full command, then any effort get
somewhere near zero response from Apple (unless there was a good level of
media buzz about our needs). This actually might be a good time to do such a
thing.

If I recall correctly, Apple tends to drop the hammer on folks that mess
with or want to mess with their source. I think there is kind of a loophole
around that however - Steve Wozniak gave away parts of either Apple II
firmware or maybe something from Integer BASIC. I don't remember the details
(a Google search for 5 minutes didn't help me remember right) but it was
recent(ish) and Apple turned a blind eye to it.

I hate to throw a damper on anyone's enthusiasm, but Jobs won't get the
letter. He's on a 6-month leave of absence due to health reasons. Most
analysts feel that he is gravely ill and most likely won't return.

Your best bet is to hope that there is still someone from the Newton
team around who can champion the cause.
