The only way that would happen is if Jobs was incapacitated, Woz got his
hooks into the issue, and there was a lot of industry pressure. Not a
trifecta we're likely to get....

I thought something along the same lines. It would be great from Apple
to release the NewtonOS Source Code, maybe using their own open source
license. This would mean that Apple would still be the owner of the
source, but would give us the opportunity to use it in other ways, maybe
create updates or even port it to some other, more modern hardware.

This is where I'm not really sure about: After all, the techniques used
in NewtonOS might be included in some other Apple product, for example
OS X or especially the iPhone. This might be a problem, especially such
gems as HWR and stuff.

And yes, I think it really is worth a try, besides all the behaviour
that Apple did show in the past in regard to request like this.

What we might need is someone - or a small group of people - who are
willing to talk to Apple or their representatives, so that the "Newton
Community" gets a face that speaks on behalf of this community.
