There is no such thing as a command line os, apart from MS-DOS that
is... :p I think you are confusing the O/S with the Shell. OS/X is a
Unix based operating system with an advanced Graphical User Interface
(GUI). It can be started with a
Command Line Interface (CLI) also it includes a Terminal Application
that allows you to run CLI applications or commands within the GUI. I
am not sure how much hard disk space vim or nano use however I think
it is trivially small. You
just need to keep in mind that none of these affect your computing
experience as you are not forced to use them nor are they loaded on
your memory when you are not using them.

Also, the fact that OS X is based on Unix does not mean that it's
obsolete or not advanced, all modern home and server computers are the
based on the binary numeral system which dates back to the 200BC does
this make them all
outdated? I think not... Had OS X been the same 70's distribution BSD
then one could argue...
