Borrowed freely my butt. NeXT didn't 'borrow' from Unix; it *was*
Unix. BSD with a Mach microkernel.

This is a large part of the reason why NeXTStep was $800.

Without the compiler.

UNIX is no fun without a compiler.

.. the compiler was an extra $5,000. (And no, there were no third-
party or open-source compilers. Well, there's GCC, but it doesn't
work unless the official compiler's installed, so it doesn't save you
any money.)

(As an aside. NeXTStep 3.3 is still my second-favorite OS ever!)
