I'd suggest concentrating on getting a serial connection going at first,
since there are no add-on packages needed on the Newton side to get it
working.

I assume that you have Newton Connection Utilities (NCU) installed on
the PowerBook?

For a browser, I'd suggesting taking a look at Classilla - a relatively
new attempt to bring more modern browsing experience to the Macintosh
Classic operating system versions.
