About the battery tray, one can bend some steel wire to the dimensions 
of the original contacts.

As for wear and tear, there are two main types of plastic used in these 
machines: ABS and PLA.  ABS is very strong (Legos are made from it) but 
inflexible.  PLA is a bit more flexible.  With either plastic, the part 
should be plenty strong.
