This doesn’t sound like a serial driver issue. You could try deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Newton/Internal to clear any cached/corrupted objects. If you can get a crash report then by all means send it to me to take a look at. Also a copy of the NCX log file (in NCX Preferences > Advanced set Logging: Full and Save log file.)
