Convert .sit to .zip is good idea, but changing .pkd to .newtonpkg is NOT. Lot of people still working on old machines (Mac OS 9), and it is better don’t touch PKG files. However on Mac OS X you can easily change PKG to NEWTONPKG by using Automator and creating system services menu. If you need help with this, I can give you more details, how to do this.
