The very first description of a "Bun Warmer" was on Alex Muhr's "Newton Secrets Secret Newtons" site:

"The first (lab) model was constructed by using two plasitic layers seperated [sic] by around 3" long bars. On the upper layer was the display, on the lower the motherboard. Because this 'thing' got realy warm, the team called it "bun warmer"
