Hello Newton Friends,

The NewtonTalk archive (https://marc.info/?l=newtontalk&w=2&r=1&s=getting+started+card&q=b) has a thread from January 2019 titled Getting Started card mystery. I wanted to reopen that discussion.

I have also read Pawel’s blog post about his experimentation with the same card and his OMP.
http://applenewton.co.uk/2019/01/06/newton-getting-started-card-inside/

I recently refurbished a Newton OMP H1000 with Newton OS 1.00 installed. I have also acquired a used Newton Getting Started card (dated 1993 with part number 649-0020-A). The card appears to be in excellent physical condition (no bends, dents, or other marks). There is no write-protect switch on the card.

When I insert the card into my refurbished Newton OMP / H1000, I get a slip on the Newton that reads:

“The card you inserted cannot be read. Do you want to completely erase this card?”
(Erase) (X)

When inserting or removing the card from the OMP, I lift the tab at the top of the left side of the device and then press the card eject button.

I presume that the tab switch near the top is the switch that is discussed in the archived discussions from 2019, but…, there is a Phillips head screw-looking opening located on the back of the OMP, center.

I have to assume that I am doing something wrong because I still consider myself a Newton noob.

I have copied a couple of pictures up to a shared Dropbox folder that show the back of the card, and my OMP with some marked up pictures.

Since this card is so old, I am also presuming that I can’t test it with my MP2x000 or eMate running Newton OS 2.1.

Cheers,
Alan Grassia
