Perhaps semantics but the problem, ultimately, IS caused by use. Certainly, age has a direct bearing on the issue but, unless you use it, the problem won’t manifest itself QED.
Working the hinge backwards and forwards has to be the very mechanism that causes the issue.
Placing a unit unused on a shelf for ~20 years will not, in and of itself, cause the hinge problem but drying out of the lubricant and subsequent frictional forces between the spring and shaft can be all that is needed to overcome the torsion of the spring and pull it out from under the retaining screw.
That is why an unused eMate that is ~20 years old can fail very quickly with even minimal use.
Bottom line is to get this repair done ASAP and don’t use until you do.
