First, I would ask what you are using to create the book. Are you using Newton Press or NTK/BookMaker? I use Press for any books I make. Press is readily available, so why would anyone use BookMaker? Also, are you pasting or "Add" ing the text? If you paste from a document such as Word, you might have control characters in the text as well.
