You're mistaken. They most certainly ARE cut and pastable. I just did it
using standard free Acrobat Reader 3.0, to be sure I wasn't wrong.
Pull down the TOOLS menu and pick "Select text" or "Select graphics".
You can't do them both TOGETHER, but you definitely can grab the text and
graphics from a PDF file for pasting elsewhere. I'm not sure what the
latest Reader can do.

Nope. The fundamental idea behind PDF is that it is VIEWABLE on any
platform with an PDF viewer, without you having to worry about having the
necessary fonts (they can be built into the PDF) or viewer for the word
processing or graphics file format used.
I think I recall that you CAN set individual PDF files so they CAN'T be
copied from when created with Acrobat (but I don't own/use Acrobat so I
may be wrong.)

Get a program like Twerx (there are several around) that add an item to
the routing menu (next to print/beam/fax) that lets you "route" the
document to the Notepad or NewtonWorks.
Or just use Newt's Cape, since it DOES what you want to accomplish.
There's even a web page on Adobe's site with a service that'll take a PDF
file anywhere on the Internet and make HTML pages out of it - Steve Weyer
mentions it on his pages somewhere. I may be misremembering, but I have
these two URL's in my bookmarks:
or more specifically:
http://access.adobe.com/simple_form.html
http://access.adobe.com/adv_form.html
