I suspect that this is another manifestation of the "stuck" Newton
problem, i.e., locking up without responding to soft resets. The
solution is to remove all power sources for at least an hour and then
plug it back in and restart. I assume this is why is mysteriously
started up again, you pulled the batteries to work on it.
