I am usually the only person around at conferences etc. with a Newton,
although many teachers do have them or have seen/heard about them. Here's an
example of how it often goes...
I was at a technology conference in Grand Rapids earlier this spring. I was
early for a sectional, so I opened up my 2100 in landscape mode on an angle,
hooked up the keyboard, and got to work on a presentation that I was
scheduled to give the next week. I was busy typing up the outline for later
transfer to PowerPoint when someone sat down next to me sort of tentatively
and started watching me work. After a few minutes she asked what kind of
computer it was. It didn't take long for me to be putting the Newton through
its paces for her. She was amazed and excited and wanted to immediately go
out and buy one of these marvelous machines. By then a small crowd had
gathered, and the discussion turned to comparing my Newton to the varous
Palms that people owned. When they saw me just writing on my Newton without
having to use Graffiti and saw all the applications I had literally in the
palm of my hand, they were all more than a little impressed. A number of
them were ready to go right out and buy one. Of course, that's when I told
them that it was no longer available and that I didn't really know of
anything similar yet. They all just shook their heads in wonder and vowed to
start haunting eBay until they could find one at a reasonable price.
This is still a dream machine, no matter what anyone says.
