When I bought my used MP2K, it had the cage, so I suspect that it had
always used the cage. I believe Kenny Song posted a while ago about how
the cage can affect the "pins" that make contact with the rechargeable
battery- Kenny, could you please clarify exactly what the issue is, if you
know?

I suspect that somehow your batteries wore down to the point that you've
messed up the Power Manager in your Newton. Leaving the batteries out
overnight will solve the problem (it solved mine after my rechargeable
battery/messed up pin combo left my Newton in the same state as yours).
Patience, and it should work in the morning with a fresh set of batteries.

Good luck,

Josh Burker
