If anyone would base such decisions on some personal grudge, it's Steve
Jobs. Who else would have taken one unfortunate press release as an
excuse for a vendetta against ATI, even if this is clearly not in Apple's
best interest?
This is not to say that Jobs killed the Newton because it was Sculley's
baby -- nobody really knows for sure --, but this theory is certainly in
line with his personality and can't be dismissed out of hand.
