The other utilities all seem to add ALL birthdays (from the time the
person is born on to the future). I know these repeating events are a
pain for syncing, but do they mess up the data structure or backup in
anyway?

Not as far as I know. I do however do regular clean up of Dates by deleting ALL data that's after a 3 month period.
