I have had this problem and it seems to be a bad connection to the
speaker. I can sometimes get the sound back if I tap the Newton lightly
just over the speaker, or if I wiggle the serial port/ power connector
cover. It shouldn't be too much trouble to fix if I ever get around to
taking the Newton apart.
