have you tried taking both the main and backup battery
out and leaving it for a couple of hours then putting
in a fresh set of batteries (or plugging it in if you
have the AC adaptor. There is an article describing
this process (called a cold boot I seem to recall)
somewhere on the Apple tech lib i think, but I am not
sure where. Perhaps somebody else on the list might
know.

Hope it helps. If you do get your Newt back to the
land of the living post to the list to let us all know
how it was achieved. It is always good to hear how
others resolved their problems.
