I don't know about AOL, but I know that it is possible with a generic
PPP dial-up connection and standard POP/SMTP Internet-style mail.

For POP/SMTP style mail, Newton OS 2.0. It helps if it has more than
1 Meg of internal flash ram (some Newton 120 only have 512 K of
internal flash ram). Be sure not to confuse this with the DRAM, which
is always 512 K on a 120.

I GV external modem will - I use one. I've never used a GV PC card modem.

Newton Connection Utilities and ClockWork both work. Don't know about
Palm Desktop being able to sync with it.
