The only issue I know of is to go to the beam prefs in the in/out box and
uncheck the "Receive Beams Automatically" box to turn it off. Checking this
box prohibits the Newton from ever actually "sleeping", because it has to be
aware enough to know a beam is coming in. Turn this feature off, and the
Newt *really* sleeps. My $0.02 USD...

I know that there was a problem with the eMate, after not being used for
a while it would have the same symptoms as you described.
The fix: Charge the eMate until the light turns green, then reset
it, without turning it on first. Then charge it again and it should be
all right.
The other thing that could be causing it is a short somewhere, maybe
a bad memory card? I installed the memory card a while ago, and have not
noticed any change in the battery life.
