Doing that will destroy the screen, and harden/wear off the rubber
coating on the case of the Newton.
Don't do it!
We've been refurbing Newtons for quite a while now, and we've found there
are only a few solvents that you can use on high quality materials like a
Newton screen (or any other computer equipment) without destroying them.
Rules of Thumb:
DON'T use any kind of alcohol, or any product that contains any amount of
alcohol.
DON'T use any kind of ammonia, or any product that contains any amount of
ammonia.
DO use a cleaner that is water based.
DON'T spray cleaner directly on the surfice of the Newt, doesn't matter
how much faster, easier, or whatever.
NewtonOz Approved Newton Cleaners:
-Water
-Diluted Vinegar
-Very Diluted Mild Dish Soap
-Plastic Enclosure Cleaners (w/out alcohol or ammonia)
-SPECIFIC Glass/Optical Cleaners
Brands to try:
BrainWash by Concept Kitchen (Discontinued, but you can still find it
around. We have it.)
KleerScreen (and variants) by KleerScreen/Meridrew (we sell this stuff
and give it away too)
&
Your Supermarket's Spice aisle, for white vinegars
Other brands, if you are careful.
Look for these marks on packaging as your tip-off to the use of
alcohol-based, or ammonia based cleaners:
-"Avoid Prolonged Skin Contact"
-"Use in Well Ventilated Areas"
-"Flammability" warnings
-scary "poison" control warnings
-"There's Alcohol/Ammonia in this Cleaner"
----As for the process of cleaning the screen, use these Newton screen cleaning techniques when caring for your screen:
-Try not to wipe your screen with Kleenex or other tissue, use cloth/s, preferably lint free. --TRY: automobile "finishing" cloths, or camera lens cleaners --REASONS: too many to mention, I'll post that on our site once it's up.
-Wipe your screen WET. Try not to do it DRY. --REASON: fibers, microscopic dirt particles, other yucky stuffs can scratch your screen
For cleaning the case, you can use any cleaner that's safe for cleaning your screen. Lint free cloths are not necessary, but if you got a lot of 'em, why not?
----
Keep your Newton clean, and it will look better and last longer. Good luck, and "Keep the Green!"*
