Hi all,
I have one of these (3Com 3C589D Ethernet card) for sale, they work
great in the Newton, with the Farallon Ethernet driver plus a little
patch (I will send a floppy with both on them on it, in either PC or
MAC format - you have to let me know which one you prefer. You can
connect to the Internet via NIE 2.0 (TCP/IP) using the NIE Ethernet
module and to any Mac for NCU/Package installer connections using
AppleTalk.
You will NOT be able to connect to an NT box, even if it runs
AppleTalk, since NCU for Windows does not support AppleTalk (bummer).
You will also be able to print to any AppleTalk Printers which are
Postscript-capable.
And you might be able to do the one or other thing, I have not tried
or I'm not aware of ... :-)
Oh - I have tried the card in an MP2100 and MP2000 - no problems. I'm
not sure about eMates and is will definitely NOT WORK in any MP130
and below.
I prefer the 3Com cards, as they are faster than the older type
Farallon counterparts. I think the Farallon 595a cards are the OEM
versions of the 3Com 3C589 (without the B, C or D at the end) which
is rather slow. The D version is about double the speed (guestimate).
I want in the region of $50 for this card - plus shipping, so let me
know if you want it.
I'm selling this one, because I have 3 of them and I have just
ordered one of the last Internet Ethernet cards from Farallon for my
PowerBook 1400 (Part #: VPN591-TP) - no, these do not work in Newtons
:).
It also comes with the dongle, I will put one in which is still in a
sealed package (I bought a few of those, as they tend to find other
owners all the time). The Card has no standard driver for PowerBooks,
but I got it to work with a little patchwork on the Farallon driver.
Best regards,
Chris
