You are correct...the Apple serial port is in
actuallity an RS-422 port. This standard has an
advantage of having long cable length capabilities.
the downside is that the components that make the
ports are more expensive. The PC ports are RS-232. In
an effort to keep costs down for PC boxes, the cheaper
RS-232 standard was used (RS-422s were also used on
MainFrames and Minicomputers like Data General and
such)
Also there is a difference in the port speed. The
RS-422 is something like 200and some kbps...(I keep
thinking 218, or 276kbps, but that is some foggy
memory) while most legacy RS-232 ports top out at
115kbps (I have seen some faster, but they aren't
reliable at those speeds)
