Yes. The short answer is they DO work, but with a
major caveat. I have not used the Novatel CDPD modem,
I've used the Motorola 100D and it DOES need special
drivers. The Novatel may be different though. I know
that the folks at Sierra Wireless would not say if
their CDPD modem would work without special drivers
but they did say (about a year ago) that if I gave
them a Newt to play with, they would develop
them...(this never happened because of obvious
reasons)
A second thing. By "low power" they mean that it won't
suck the life out of your batteries in under 5
minutes. You might get 1/2 an hour instead..
CDPD modems use a service provided by your LEC (local
exchange carrier...your local bell) Older CDPD modems
used so much power, they had their own seperate
battery, and they still have that option...(check with
Novatel, I know that the Sierra Wireless devices have
an add-on battery pack)
The reason being is that the modem device draws power
directly from your device...
Good luck with your endvor.
