NTLK Newbie Internet dilema, PPP fails

Hi Newts,

I am going nuts trying to get my MP2k connected to the internet. My
ISP support asked if "Newton" was a Windows program and then gave me the
instructions for using dial up networking on windows so, as you might
imagine, they are not very helpful. I bought this Newton off eBay a few
weeks ago and it came with no system disks or manuals. I have been
gathering up the software that I think I need by using the FAQs and a
.PDF of the Manual. I just haven't managed a full internet connection
and think I may be missing some software that just belongs there but I
don't know I don't have it. I will attempt a detailed list of what
appears in the Newt Extras tray and a description of my setup.

Newton MP2k with OS2.1 (started from a total brain wipe)
Modem is a Megahertz XJ1144, in the bottom slot and I am using the modem
set up titled "MHz XJ1144"

With "all icons" folder open this is a list of all icons displayed:

Both Nethopper and SimpleMail will call up the connection slip and the
modem dials and I hear the modems talk ("two chickens copulating") and
then get quiet, followed by nothing. With Nethopper the connection slip
stops at "engaging PPP driver" with SimpleMail the connection slip says
"connecting to the internet" and stops. Both messages show for about
two minutes before they just disappear.

I found this web site: http://www.msu.edu/~deverman/newton/ppp.html and
the slips he displays are slightly different from what shows up on my
MP. I don't get to tell my MP to use a dynamic address but I do get to
select "Server" under configuration, which, I think, is the same thing.

Anyway, almost everything seems to work. I think the Newton would tell
me if authentication failed or the password wasn't working.

Thanks lots,

Randy Gore
