Interesting - if I recall, correctly it was Integer BASIC that was
written by Woz, and the later AppleSoft BASIC was an MS production. I
didn't use Apple ][s much; we only had one in high school and it only had
a tape drive for program storage, which was much more pathetic than the
tape drives on TRS-80's (at least you could name and search for your
programs saved to tape on TRS-80's!)
I only really got into Apple equipment when I bought my first Mac on Feb.
29, 1984. Bought MS-BASIC along with it. And wrote the first
incarnation of BinHex for the Mac in it from an TRS-80 MS-BASIC
equivalent I had. Yves Lempuerer (author of the the TRS-80 emulator for
the Mac) later took the first BinHex and came up with the current Binhex
protocol (along with a group of other contributors).
MS-BASIC has come a long way since then (I'm presently learning Visual
BASIC) The NS-BASIC that just came out for Palms looks very much like it.

Afraid, it's so. Don't say "Trash-80"! Don't make me come over there...
;-)
I WORKED for Radio Shack from 1980-82 at their local computer center.
Still have two TRS-80's (the mod 1 and the pocket computer 2) in my
"collection" of old computers. Sold the Model 4 to buy my original 1984
Mac, though.

Yep, in about 1977. ;-) You ever get the lowercase mod for your II?
Finding the TRS-80 emulator (VERY well done) for the Mac was pretty darn
cool. Brought back a LOT of memories. I remember their first hard disk
circa 1981 or so. 5MB and about the size of a Macintosh G3 or G4 tower
unit. VERY touchy.
