I have used my Newton for most of my Ph.D. research, which involves
a lot of footnoting. What I have always done is just hit return twice so
there is a line below what I am writing, and whenever I need a footnote
I add it at the end. When I import it to the PowerBook I have to do some
cutting and pasting, but this just adds extra editing, which is always
good.
When I have imported things to my Newton that uses footnotes, I
usually reverse the process in something like text-edit plus and then
use Newton Press to make all of the notes links.
Maybe too tedious for your needs, but it works for me.
