I don't know anything more specific than what the faq
(www.chuma.org/newton/faq among other places):

e) Hard Reset ("Brainwipe")

Before you perform a hard reset, first remove all PCMCIA cards from the
Newton (this is really important, otherwise you may destroy the card!).
