You're in a 'heap' of trouble??? :-D

So far the 4 meg. DRAM is the 'official' max., but there mentions of a DVT
model with 11 megs.

Yup, any pkg., asks and gets heap unless you 'freeze' it. I have over
forty utilities kept frozen until needed.

And what exactly is heap?

When you overfeed a horse and the horse has to really go...

Well, in Newton-context it's...
..heap = volitile DRAM. Emptied during reset. Decreasing as you open/use
pkgs. 'Garbage collection' recommended to freeup heap space. So far stuck
at 4 megs.(~430 Kb for heap).
..memory = non-volitile flash RAM. Internal storage and any memory card
storage. Persistant and only emptied during a hard-reset. Decreasing when
you add pkgs. and store data. So far stuck at 4 megs. internal, up to 32
meg. linear flash cards(kingmax had 40 meg.) and Paul G's
ATA-Driver(limited to 4 megs. but accesses up to four partions).
