John,

I misunderstood you.

I am a hardware guy and when I see 'button' I immeadiately start
thinking of a physical item.(hence the power switch reference)

No doubt, you could write some code to scan the port. I can't
personally, but I would guess that there are a multitude of talented
people out there that could do this.

In the meantime, toggling the power switch isn't THAT bad.
