Re: [NTLK] newbie questions

As a fellow Pismo user, I have tried many different attempts to sync and
finally have what works well for me. First you need the Newton Connection
Utilities and the update. I received them on floppy so I first used disk
copy to copy them to my hard drive using a friend's usb floppy drive. I ran
the install program then the update program.

Next I needed some way to connect the Newton to the powerbook. You could do
it with ethernet card and connect that way but how do you get the drivers
for the ethernet card on the Newton before you have been able to synch?
Couldn't solve that one. I also tried a Belkin serial adapter but that
didn't work either. Finally ended up with the keyspan USB PDA adapter. This
thing is marvelous because it goes in the USB connector and the drivers load
the appropriate extensions. It was also advertised as being Newton
compatible, which I found it is very much. You'll need the windows cable
instead of the mac cable. Then you have to set up the Newton Connection
Utilities for the Keyspan USB PDA (yes its added to the list) and set up the
newton for serial connection. Just tap and go. Works very well. (It is a
little slow though).

On your last question, I'm still a newbie. I hope to use Neutorage (or
something like that) but haven't given it a try yet. There is also ACT long
since discontinued and scores of other programs. I don't think the latest
edition of Now up to date and Contact are Newton compatible or I would have
bought that. Apple's old Claris Organizer was also compatible. I don't think
you can sync with the palm desktop software, which is an update of Claris
Organizer.

You'll probably get lots of better suggestions here shortly. Good Luck. Once
you get synched you can begin searching the web for all kinds of neat stuff
that's still out there for the Newton.
