I dunno. It's important to note that the common 3com 3C589C cards are
10/100 cards that are indeed the 16 bit interface, once an I even
found a 100 mbs card that was a 16 bit interface, I keep holidng on
it them hoping someday someone with more programming know how than me
would write a new driver.

simple answer, however, is that there may have been a firmware change
which rendered the driver unable to work.
