i have a 5M (not a 5MP) and it has a localtalk port on the back, so yes, it
would support serial.

i don't know what the original question was, so the following may be
off-mark: if you are trying to print from your newton to the laserjet, you
can connect to it directly using the cables that came with the newton. you
would then select the "choose network laserwriter" in the print dialog and
the printer will be the only one that shows in the list of available
printers. even though you are connected directly, you would be printing to
it via appletalk.

if you are trying to print via the company network, it's a different story.
