If I recall correctly, it was during Amelio's watch that there is a
mini-renaissance of the Newton, what with the spinoff of the Newton into its
own company and all. Then Jobs absorbed the Newton company back into Apple
and shitcanned it. Which do you think is worse? Realising that you don't
have the resources/inspiration/willpower/whatever to do right by the Newton
and letting it go free to succeed or fail on its own, or absorbing the
company back into Apple, knowing full well that you don't have the
resources/inspiration/willpower/whatever to do right by the Newton and then
shitcanning it (possibly because it was Sculley who initiated the project and
somebody wanted revenge for being ignominously fired from Apple)?
Personally, I think Amelio did the right thing for something he knew he
couldn't develop or market properly. Spindler was essentially the ultimate
seatwarmer, a no-op of the highest calibre.
