Well.....
I found the site, Andy. And did the download. Paid Revelar the $25. Got
the registration codes. They were very courteous and prompt in responding
to my emails. This was all done last Friday.
Now, for the results...
The package for the Newton installed and ran without problems. It is just a
communication package between Newton and Mac, so not any big problem there.
1. On the Macintosh (mine is a 9600 PCI bus machine running OS 9.0.4) the
main Mac program RCU 2.5 fails when trying to complete a connection. It is
a hard crash with a type 15 error, which is a dsLoadErr - Segment loader
error. I did sent them a notice of the problem, including two Macsbug
StdLog reports. This same problem has already been reported by others on
this list, so it is not an isolated problem. Without support I don't expect
Revelar to act on this report.
2. The program called Accordian 1.5 is not usable without an installed
version of FileMaker on the Macintosh. Accordian is really an intermediat
agent that acts between the Newton and FileMaker on a MAC. However,
Accordian 1.5 requires a version 3.x of FileMaker. Accordian will not work
with FileMaker 4.x and subsequent versions of FileMaker. Consequently,
since FileMaker v 3.x is no longer available for sale, the program Accordian
is useless. Really a disappointment since I had hoped to work out a
cooperative arrangement between my Newton running the Leverage database, and
my Mac running the current FileMaker. :-(
3. That said, the third program, Notable 1.2, did work with my Newton 2100
and Macintosh!!!! So, that program, while it has a very limited, narrow
feature set, is nonetheless working.
I have asked Revelar to give me credit back of $25 for these programs, and I
will discard them once that has been done.
Living with the Newton, no matter how well it serves me, is still filled
with disappointments... ...but, I have learned a lot about living with
orphaned products. :-)
Regards,
Richard DAVIS.
